Maldives is an island nation situated in the Indian Ocean, about 700 kilometers south-west of Sri Lanka and 400 kilometers south-west of India. It consists of approximately 1,190 coral islands grouped into 26 atolls, spread over roughly 90,000 square kilometers. Maldives is the flattest country in the world with an average land elevation of 1.8 meters above sea level. No individual island is more than 8km in length which makes the absence of river although lakes can be found on some islands.

Climate
The temperature of Maldives ranges between 24 and 33 °C (75.2 and 91.4 °F) throughout the year. Although the humidity is relatively high, the constant sea breezes help to keep the air moving. Two seasons dominate Maldives’ weather: the dry season associated with northeast monsoon and the rainy season brought by southwest monsoon. The annual rainfall averages 2,540 millimeters (100 in) in the north and 3,810 millimeters (150 in) in the south. Dry season extends from January to April while wet season extends from May to November.
Fishing in the Maldives
The prohibition of net and long-line fishing for commercial purposes has sustained the abundance of fisheries in the Maldives. Commercial fishermen use the traditional “line and pole” fishing which prevents by-catch of other species other than their main target, that is tuna. Sport Fishing, therefore, has been much appreciated by enthusiasts visiting the Maldives. Among the game fish species found in Maldives are Giant Trevally, Barracuda, Wahoo, Dorado, Yellow Fin Tuna, Sailfish and Marlin. However, abundance of some species varies by season.
